I was just making a mess, and seeing where it led me....
I have a couple of ideas about the different aspects of the CAT. About the themes I was thinking about the theme of ‘breaking bad news to a friend, because it will be better if it comes from you’. But I don’t think that this has to involve a death, but it could do. In terms of setting I was thinking of keeping a farm theme, but also it would be effective to not necessarily have this theme. I think instead of doing this I would like a more ‘modern’ setting, when I was talking to Jordan he mentioned a school yard with teenagers (but I don’t want to copy) and this made me think that it would be more effective to have a different setting. Maybe a workplace, but I would like to incorporate teenagers as the main characters. Could be a workplace where teenagers work. But I think the setting depends on what exactly I make the major theme extract from the text ‘of mice and men’ is, and how I choose to manipulate this into a theme that suits me. I am still unsure of how I would morph ‘breaking bad news to a friend, because it will be better if it comes from you’ into an effective piece that has some meaning. I think that incorporating a death into the story would increase the effectiveness of conveying the plot, but if not used correctly it could just be a take off of the text.
Maybe using the theme of the ‘dream’ that George and Lennie have could be changed into a man or a group of friends in jail and the dream that they have is crushed when they are sentenced for life, and as a result they kill themselves, or maybe one kills the other ‘being a mate’ because the victim sees death as being the only way that he can achieve their dream. If I did this it would include the mateship part of the story, morph the setting into a more modern setting, have the ‘dream’ of a perfect life after they get enough money (in the story, would be once they are set free) then when Lennie kills Curley’s wife and ruins the dream (again in the story this would be when they are convicted of murder, possibly of someone’s wife) and this conviction would mark the end of their dream as they are convicted and given life sentences. I think if one of them killed the other because they wanted to die, then this would help symbolize their dire circumstances, and this can be related to George and Lennie’s story. The dream shall be about how they will live after they get let out, will involve a maybe a marriage, for that to happen it will have to be a man and a women that form the relationship. That could work, because at the end if she killed him, it shows that the physically strongest may not necessarily be the strongest mentally. I don’t know who I would cast as the roles, but I will research some people that have a history of playing ‘hardened’ characters, as being in jail I think this is how they should come across, but during the film their softer side will be exposed. For the justification it shows that criminals can regret what they have done and feel remorse and what to just live a normal life. They don’t have to be stereotyped as criminal and disallowed the pleasures of normal living, jail can change you and more people should be more accepting of released prisoners. I think I shall do that....
The only thing I am worried about is how to justify why I would be doing this theme, as I think I approached it the wrong way and thought of a setting and the themes I wanted in it without thinking about the justification. So any ideas would be helpful.
