Guided 7: Does 'The Aviator' say anything of interest to me or us today?

The aviator has fantastic relevance and interest to us today. It generates many thoughts and ideas in relation to the concept of dreams and goals which we can apply in our lives today.

Firstly and most importantly is this idea of chasing and fulfilling our dreams. Howard Hughes throughout the movie is constantly trying to chase his dreams of flying the fastest plane in the world and breaking many various aviation records such as flying around the world in 4 days. He has to overcome many obstacles such as his obsessive compulsive nature and major competition in the form of Pan American airlines when he is trying to commercialize flying. To me these concepts are very relevant to us today as everyone needs to apply goals and everyone has hurdles to overcome. If anything this movie is a testament to this idea and shows that no matter what the circumstances you just have to keep trying to achieve that goal because without it there is no real point in attempting anything.

Secondly this movie discusses the idea of companionship and how people need to stick together. Hughes' relationships throughout the film especially with Ava Garndiner shows that no matter what people have to stick together particuarly during the tougher times of life, in this case when Hughes became manically depressed and shut himself away, Ava pulled him out of the spiral and made him clean again. This we believe is a very important idea to apply today. The fact is that we are sometimes going to need help in the form of friends and family to get us through the tougher times of life, this kind of companionship is a very important aspect of life and is shown brilliantly throughout the movie.
